The IBDP comprises of six subject areas:
Students have to study three of these at Standard Level and three at Higher Level.
In addition to the 6 subjects studied, there are three compulsory requirements.
The students have to write an elaborative research work, the Extended Essay, which is of 4000 words. In addition, they explore the nature of knowledge across disciplines as well as gain an appreciation for other cultural perspectives through another core component, that is, Theory of Knowledge. The students also participate in CAS – Creativity, Activity, Service – which encourages them to explore artistic pursuits, sports and community service work. The students are assessed at the end of two years.
The grading system is criterion based (results are determined by performance against set standards, not by each student’s position in the overall rank order); validity, reliability and fairness are the watchwords of the Diploma Programme’s assessment strategy. Academic integrity is highlighted at each step of this enriched curriculum, preparing students effectively for the next level. The IB also works closely with universities in all regions of the world to gain recognition for the IB Diploma Programme.
In a nutshell, the IBDP encourages the students to be thinkers, inquirers, communicators, open-minded, risk takers, principled, balanced, knowledgeable, caring and reflective. IB Diploma is truly a passport to higher education around the world.
