Psychology Collaborative Session 2018-19

DPGA > News and Notifications > Psychology Collaborative Session 2018-19

A collaborative session on Mental health- Etiology and Prevalence was conducted by the Psychology Department at Dr. Pillai Global Academy, Panvel. The resource person for the session was Ms. Shivaranjini Kulkarni, Senior Manager at Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai and parent of DP1 student. The workshop was attended by the Psychology students of Grade 11 (IB and AS Level). The session’s core objective was to broaden one’s perception of the concept of Abnormality. Dimensions of Normality-societal norms, beliefs and values were discussed at length. Ms. Kulkarni related her personal experiences in the field which involved stigma and mistrust amongst the general population.

She showed us a video clip of a televised interview with a celebrated Indian actress, Ms. Deepika Padukone who shared her personal struggles whilst she battled severe depression. The interview was an eye-opening experience as it cleared many misconceptions we had pertaining to mental health. Mental disorders are as much emotionally scarring as it is physically crippling. It requires a comprehensive effort of the psychiatrist as well as the community system around the individual to enable him/her to overcome his illness. The session proved to be an enriching lesson in the value of developing an open heart, and a non-judgmental spirit to uplift human resilience against the odds of such disorders.
