Xenocratic Model United Nations Conference – 5th and 6th July, 2019

“The United Nations has a critical role to play in promoting stability, security, democracy, human rights, and economic development. The UN is as relevant today as at any time in its history.”

Ingrained in the remarkable Model United Nations (MUN) is the Xenocratic Model United Nations, shrunk to be called as XMUN, which is an apt platform for fiery and engrossing youngsters, discussing, researching and debating on the critical global issues and diplomatic controversies.

Uncoiled on 6th July 2019 at Dr. Pillai Global Academy Panvel, XMUN commenced with a zestful flavour. The opening ceremony comprised of an introduction of the 4 different committees, namely, Disarmament and International Security (DISEC), Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and lastly the International Press (IP)–to the attending delegates. Soon after this, the enduring journey for about a hundred participating enthusiasts unfolded…

The UNEP (United Nations Environmental Program) agenda was ‘Protecting the environment in times of armed conflicts’. War can result into loss of life and land, but what many overlook is the loss of the natural habitat and environmental degradation that ensues due to it. Many countries have been affected by long and ruinous war campaigns and some seem to still continue- all affecting the neighboring areas.

Women’s economic empowerment is one of the most important matters concerning gender equality. The Economic and Social Council focused on the agenda ‘Establishing a Framework to Encourage Women’s Economic and Social Development’. Crucial happenings such as gender equality, the pay-gap, sexual harassment, paid maternity leave that women face in the workplace were discussed by the delegates. The greatest need of the hour is the change of social attitude to women. The main aim is end all forms of discriminations against all women and girls across the globe.

The two day conference ended with a memorable award ceremony exhibiting the energetic loud cheers of anticipation throughout. The conference surely brought out the inner diplomat in every delegate who participated. It encouraged them to take part in debate regarding relevant current global issues and explore solutions to these issues producing stellar results. The young minds thus, dived deep to the crux of the problem and emerged with an understanding which shaped their world view, giving them a more global perspective.
